I started Downstage Left out of a desire to challenge myself as a director and to challenge young actors who are still enrolled in higher education pursuing theatre.  As a nontraditional student at The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, students often asked me about my experience in Minneapolis, MN and the theatre community that I had been a part of before returning to finish my BA in Theatre.  They sought advice on how to transition from student to working artist.  My answer was always the same--create your own opportunities, create your own work.  There is definitely a higher level of pride in building something from scratch and the rewards are far greater, as well.  So, this company really was me putting my money where my mouth is.

The type of theatre that I wanted to work on wasn't being produced in Eau Claire, WI regularly, if at all.  Everything was comedy, musical, or farce--there was nothing really dramatic or realistic.  So, I decided to create what I wanted to see.  Downstage Left  focuses on smaller ensemble pieces that are usually contemporary American works.  As an artist, I love to explore the human psyche. I want the audience to go on the ride and experience all the awkwardness, humility, fear, triumph, or whatever other feeling lies in the middle.  I love to watch an audience member struggle with how they feel about a character--they may not like them, but they agree with them and that can be hard.  I have been so fortunate to have had actors, artists, technicians, and audience members trust me and follow me.  We are all creating this together and creating with friends is the best way to create!

If you have already supported us, Thank You.  If you have yet to experience a Downstage Left production--what are you waiting for?  We welcome you!
